Though the Waikato trout fishing is mostly overshadowed by the big-name rivers and lakes of the central north island plateau, don’t underestimate the opportunity within just a few short hours of Rua Resort. Quality rivers and streams abound in every direction. The nearest such stream is a mere 30 minute drive from Rua Resort, and offers an excellent bush-country fishing experience at the base of Mt. Pirongia. National Park and the Whakapapa and Whanganui Rivers are only a few hours to the south, and the Ohinemuri is just a short drive to the northwest. It’s not unheard of to find both rainbow and brown trout in excess of 6 pounds making their way out of the warm waters of the Waikato River into the smaller tributaries throughout the summer. However, most fish in the nearby rivers will average around 2 pounds.
